How to prepare the three required recommendation letters for a UK Global Talent endorsement

Why These Letters Matter

The Global Talent endorsement requires three letters of recommendation, each from a different established expert in digital technology who has known your work for at least 12 months (GOV.UK). They are mandatory, they do not count toward the 10 evidence documents, and endorsement assessors read them closely for independence, credibility, and specificity.

Who Should Write Them

Ideal Letter Writers

Senior, recognised figures in digital technology (founders, CTOs, distinguished engineers, professors)
People who know your work directly and can cite specific projects and outcomes
Writers from different organisations, so the letters add independent perspectives
Writers whose own credentials are easy to verify (public profiles, notable roles)

Weaker Choices

Three colleagues from your current employer
Junior peers or friends without standing in the sector
Writers who know you socially but not professionally
Anyone whose letter would just repeat your CV

Formal Requirements

Each letter must be written for your Global Talent application specifically (not a recycled job reference), be typed, dated and signed, run to up to 3 sides of A4 (not counting the writer's credentials and contact details), include the writer's phone number, email and CV or other proof of credentials, explain how the writer knows your work, and give its own examples — each letter must provide different examples.

Writer's credentials — who they are, their standing in digital technology, and why their judgment carries weight
How they know your work — the professional relationship or how they encountered your contributions
Specific achievements — 2–3 concrete examples with dates, scale, and outcomes; each should corroborate an evidence item in your bundle
Why you meet the track — an explicit assessment of your standing as a leading talent (Talent) or your trajectory toward leadership (Promise)
The UK angle — how you would benefit from living in the UK, how you would contribute to UK digital technology, and your future plans

Generic praise — "an outstanding engineer" without specifics an assessor can verify
CV repetition — restating your job history instead of adding independent perspective
Identical phrasing across letters — suggests they were drafted by the applicant
No track alignment — the letter never addresses whether you are a leading talent or a potential one
Unverifiable writers — no credentials, no contact details, no public footprint
