Education

Canadian credentials or foreign degrees with a valid ECA

What This Criterion Requires

CRS and the FSW grid award points for education level. Foreign credentials normally need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from an IRCC-designated organization (e.g. WES, IQAS, ICES). Canadian credentials are documented with transcripts and completion letters rather than an ECA.

Without a valid ECA, foreign education typically counts for zero Express Entry points — even if you hold a prestigious degree.

What Officers Look For

  • ECA from a designated organization stating Canadian equivalency
  • Alignment between the credential claimed in the profile and the ECA outcome
  • Validity of the ECA at relevant milestones (commonly five years from issue)
  • For Canadian study points: eligible program completion evidence

Evidence Strength

Strong Evidence
  • ECA report with clear equivalency level matching the profile
  • Diplomas and transcripts that support the assessed credential

Canadian degree/diploma packages for Canadian education bonuses
  • Consistent institution names and dates across forms and uploads
  • Weak Evidence
    • Claiming a master's/PhD when the ECA assessed a lower equivalency
    • Expired ECA at application submission
    • Entering education in the profile before the ECA exists
    • Partial transcripts without proof of completion

    Common Refusal / ADR Triggers

    Common Problems

    • Profile education level higher than ECA equivalency
    • Using a non-designated assessment body
    • Confusing professional licensure with CRS education points — regulators are separate
    • Multiple credentials entered without understanding which ones actually add CRS

    Tips for Strengthening Your Evidence

    Pro Tips

    • Order the ECA first — it often takes weeks and gates honest profile creation.
    • Enter only credentials you can prove; speculative entries risk misrepresentation findings.
    • If the ECA result surprises you, rebuild CRS expectations before paying for rush services elsewhere.
    • Keep digital and paper copies of the full ECA package.

    Relevant Document Types
