Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

How to turn a foreign degree into Express Entry education points

Why This Document Matters

For foreign education, an ECA from an IRCC-designated organization is what makes the credential count in Express Entry. Without it, education points generally do not apply — regardless of the school's reputation abroad.

How to Prepare

  1. Choose a designated organization appropriate for your credential type
  2. Submit diplomas/transcripts exactly as the organization requires (often sealed/official)
  3. Wait for the report stating Canadian equivalency
  4. Enter that equivalency level in your Express Entry profile — not a higher aspirational level
  5. Keep the report valid through application milestones

Strong vs Weak Usage

Strong
  • Profile education matches the ECA equivalency verbatim
  • ECA still within its validity window at eAPR
  • Supporting diplomas/transcripts uploaded consistently
  • Clear reference number IRCC can verify
Weak
  • Claiming a PhD/master's when the ECA assessed a bachelor's equivalency
  • Creating a profile before the ECA exists
  • Using a non-designated evaluation
  • Expired ECA discovered only after ITA

Tips

Timing

Start the ECA before language retests if your timeline is tight — both are prerequisites for an honest, competitive profile.
