Why This Document Matters

For foreign education, an ECA from an IRCC-designated organization is what makes the credential count in Express Entry. Without it, education points generally do not apply — regardless of the school's reputation abroad.

How to Prepare

Choose a designated organization appropriate for your credential type
Submit diplomas/transcripts exactly as the organization requires (often sealed/official)
Wait for the report stating Canadian equivalency
Enter that equivalency level in your Express Entry profile — not a higher aspirational level
Keep the report valid through application milestones

Claiming a PhD/master's when the ECA assessed a bachelor's equivalency

Using a non-designated evaluation
Expired ECA discovered only after ITA

Timing

Start the ECA before language retests if your timeline is tight — both are prerequisites for an honest, competitive profile.
