Genuine Temporary Entrant (Home Country Ties)

Demonstrating genuine temporary intent under the GTE requirement

Official Definition

Evidence supporting the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement — that the applicant genuinely intends a temporary stay and has strong incentives (economic, social, family) to return home, considering their personal circumstances, immigration history, and the strength of the trip's stated purpose.

What Case Officers Look For

The GTE requirement applies to every subclass 600 applicant since November 2016. Officers weigh five things: your circumstances in your home country; your incentives to stay in or leave Australia; your personal and financial circumstances; your immigration history (including prior visa compliance); and any other relevant matter.

Ties evidence should show reasons to return: stable employment with approved leave and a return date; property or business ownership; ongoing studies; dependent family remaining at home; or other concrete obligations. Generic letters without specifics carry little weight — officers evaluate the overall picture, not any single document.

    • Copied templates that look coached or identical across applicants

    Common Refusal / Processing Triggers

    Common Problems

    • No credible employment, studies, or property when those are claimed in the application.
    • Young applicants with unstable employment and no other ties explanation.
    • Plans that look like an indefinite stay or job search in Australia.
    • A history of prior visa non-compliance that undermines the GTE story.

    Tips for Strengthening Your Evidence

    Pro Tips

    • Ask employers to state position, tenure, leave approval, and return-to-work expectations.
    • Prefer primary documents (deeds, registration certificates) over informal claims.
    • Align your application's employment and family answers with what you submit as evidence.
    • Quality beats quantity — a few specific, verifiable ties outweigh a stack of weak letters.

    Relevant Document Types

Typical uploads: employment letters, property or business ownership documents, family dependency evidence, and school enrollment confirmations.
