What it shows

This letter confirms that you hold a job, what you earn, and that your employer has approved leave for the travel dates and expects you back. It is the main evidence of ties to home for an employed visitor.

Strong vs. weak

Strong

On letterhead, signed by a named manager or HR officer with contact details
States position, start date, salary, approved leave dates and return-to-work date
Dates match the itinerary

Weak

An unsigned or undated letter
No mention of leave or of your return
Contact details that cannot be verified

How to prepare it

Ask for the letter shortly before you apply, so it is recent
Have it state the exact leave dates and that your position is kept
If self-employed, use business registration, tax returns and client contracts instead

Common mistake

A letter that only says you work there. Without approved leave and a return date it says little about whether you will come back.
