Optional criterion — academic contributions to digital technology through research
Last updated Oct 21, 2026
Educational only — not legal advice.
This optional criterion covers academic contributions to the field through research published or endorsed by an expert (Appendix Global Talent; GOV.UK). The research should be in digital technology, and your own part in it should be clear. Like every optional criterion, it needs at least 2 evidence documents, and none of them can count for another criterion.
The two tracks differ here. For Exceptional Talent, the rules accept research that was published or endorsed by an expert. For Exceptional Promise, the rules name research endorsed by an expert only — so on the Promise track a publication on its own is not enough; you need an established expert's endorsement of the research.

In Visa Engine, uploads that most often support this criterion include Publication, Citation Evidence, and Recommendation Letter (the expert's endorsement of the research).
