Proof of money for living costs for the first year of study: usually a blocked account (Sperrkonto) at a German bank, or a scholarship from a recognised body, or a formal obligation (Verpflichtungserklärung) by someone living in Germany.
A student must show they can pay their living costs. For the first year of study the required amount is EUR 11,904, which is EUR 992 a month; a stay shorter than a year needs EUR 992 for each month. The amount is reviewed periodically, so check the figure on your own mission's page.
The usual proof is a blocked account (Sperrkonto) at a bank in Germany from which only the monthly amount can be paid out. The other accepted proofs are a scholarship from a recognised body that covers the costs, or a formal obligation (Verpflichtungserklärung) by someone living in Germany, given at their foreigners' authority.
Students at private or fee-charging universities also show that the first year's tuition is paid. A parent's own bank statement, or a promise to pay, is not one of the accepted forms.
