The security clearance some courses need before you apply

An Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate, needed before applying for some master's, doctoral and integrated-master's courses in sensitive technology subjects, unless the applicant's nationality is exempt.
This requirement is optional: it applies only if the course and the applicant's nationality require it. The Academic Technology Approval Scheme applies to certain international students in sensitive technology-related subjects. For a Student visa it concerns courses at master's level or above (RQF 7 or above), and undergraduate courses with an integrated master's year may also need it. The subject is identified by a CAH3 code, normally on the offer letter.
Nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, the USA, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and the EU member states listed by GOV.UK are exempt. Others whose course requires it must get the certificate before applying for the visa.
ATAS is free, takes at least 30 working days (6 weeks) with no fast track, and the certificate is valid for 6 months for a visa application.

Typical uploads: ATAS certificate naming the applicant, the course and the CAH3 subject code, or the sponsor's confirmation that ATAS is not needed for the course.
