ATAS Certificate

The security clearance some UK courses need before you apply

What it shows

An Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate is the clearance some international students need before applying for a UK Student visa on certain master's, doctoral and integrated-master's courses in sensitive technology subjects. It names you, the course and the institution. ATAS is free and the certificate is valid for 6 months for a visa application.

Names you, the course and the institution, with the CAH3 subject code
Issued within the 6 months it is valid for a visa application
Obtained before the visa application is made

Weak

No certificate where the course and nationality require one
A certificate for a different course or institution
A certificate that has passed its 6-month validity

How to prepare it

Find the CAH3 code on your offer letter and check on GOV.UK whether your course and nationality need ATAS
Apply as soon as you have the offer: it takes at least 30 working days and cannot be fast-tracked
If ATAS does not apply, keep the sponsor's confirmation with your file

Common mistake

Waiting until the visa application is ready before asking for ATAS. The wait is at least 30 working days.
