What it shows

Travel medical insurance pays for emergency treatment, hospital care and repatriation during the trip. For a Schengen visa it is mandatory: the policy must cover at least EUR 30,000, be valid in all Schengen states, and cover the whole stay.

Strong vs. weak

Strong

A certificate naming you, with dates covering the entire stay
States the amount of cover and the territory, and includes repatriation
Issued by an insurer the consulate accepts

Weak

Cover that starts after arrival or ends before departure
A card or credit-card benefit with no certificate of the amount and territory
A policy that excludes the countries you will visit

How to prepare it

Buy cover for the exact travel dates, with a day or two of margin
Ask the insurer for a certificate written for visa purposes
For other destinations, check whether insurance is required or only recommended

Common mistake

Insurance dates that are shorter than the itinerary by a day. The policy must cover the full period of intended stay.
