Financial Means / Proof of Funds

Showing organic, sufficient funds to cover the stay and return home

Official Definition

Evidence that the applicant has enough money to maintain themselves (and any accompanying family members) during their stay in Canada and to return home, without unauthorized work.

What IRCC Officers Look For

Officers look for organic bank statement history — typically 3–6 months — rather than a single-day balance snapshot. A static or newly inflated balance is a common trigger for doubt. If a large deposit appears shortly before you apply, explain its source with supporting documents (pay stub, notice of assessment, sale agreement).

There is no fixed minimum amount — it scales with trip length and whether you'll pay for a hotel or a host is covering costs. Officers also look for income continuity (ongoing salary or business income), not just a one-time balance, since it signals you won't be left financially unstable after the trip.

Evidence Strength

Strong Evidence
  • Bank statements covering 3–6 months with organic, stable transaction history
  • Pay slips, notice of assessment, or other income proof matching bank activity

    Common Refusal / Processing Triggers

    Common Problems

    • Unexplained cash infusions shortly before applying.
    • Statements that cover too few months or appear altered.
    • No sign of ongoing income — only a static, one-time balance.
    • Amounts that don't match the stated itinerary or length of stay.

    Tips for Strengthening Your Evidence

    Pro Tips

    • Prefer official bank statements over informal screenshots.
    • Show months of history, not a single balance figure.
    • If a deposit stands out, attach the pay stub, sale document, or notice of assessment that explains it.
    • Tie the amount requested to your actual itinerary — don't round up arbitrarily.

    Relevant Document Types

Typical uploads: bank statements, pay slips, notice of assessment, and sponsorship or invitation letters with the sponsor's financial evidence when someone else is covering costs.
