Travel document requirements for a Standard Visitor application
A passport or travel document valid for the whole of the applicant's intended stay in the United Kingdom. Unlike some jurisdictions, the UK does not require six months' validity beyond the trip — the document simply must remain valid throughout the visit.
Caseworkers need a legible biodata page showing your full name, nationality, passport number, and issue/expiry dates. The UK rule is simpler than some other countries': your passport must remain valid for the whole of your stay — there is no six-month buffer rule beyond the trip end date, as with a US visitor visa. Names on the passport, application form, and supporting letters should match. Prior UK visas or entry stamps (in the current or previous passport) are useful context when relevant.
Damaged passports, mismatched spellings, or unclear scans create processing problems and should be fixed before you apply.
Not the same rule as the US
Applicants familiar with the US "six months beyond your stay" convention sometimes over-renew unnecessarily. For the UK, the test is simply: does the passport stay valid through your last planned day in the UK?
