Why this programme, at this school, in Canada, and what you will do afterwards

Educational only — not legal advice.
The applicant's own letter explaining why they want to study in Canada, why this programme at this school, how it fits their past studies, work, and future plans, and that they understand their responsibilities as an international student.
IRCC lists a letter of explanation as recommended and sets no format or length. Because the officer must be satisfied that you are a genuine student, this letter is often where the choice of programme is explained. Officers read it against the rest of your documents.
A credible letter explains: why this programme and school; why in Canada; why now; how it follows from your earlier studies and work (or why you are changing field or returning after a gap); how the studies are paid for; and what you plan to do afterwards in your home country. It also shows that you understand your responsibilities as an international student.
A generic letter, or one that contradicts the documents, weakens the application.
