Your answers to the genuine student questions, and the documents that support them
Last updated Oct 28, 2026
Educational only — not legal advice.
Answers to the genuine student questions in the application, in English and each up to 150 words, with supporting documents. The officer must be satisfied the applicant genuinely intends to stay in Australia temporarily to study.
Since 23 March 2024 the genuine student (GS) requirement has replaced the genuine temporary entrant requirement. You answer questions in the application in English, each in up to 150 words, and support the answers with documents. They cover four things: your current circumstances (ties to family, community and employment at home, economic circumstances and military service); why you want to study this course in Australia with this provider rather than in your home country; how completing the course will benefit you in the future; and your immigration history, including earlier visa refusals or cancellations.
The officer reads these together, with any other relevant information, to decide whether you genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily to study. Answers that agree with the CoE, your earlier studies and your work history are easier to believe than general statements.
